ALL ABOUT ADAMPUR AIR BASE

                ADAMPUR AIR BASE

Adampur Air Base is situated between the cities of Jalandhar and Hoshiarpur in Punjab, India. It lies approximately 6.7 km from Adampur town, 28 km from Jalandhar, and 27 km from Hoshiarpur

The base is just about 100 km from the India-Pakistan border which shows its importance for northern air defenses.

Established in the 1950s, it has played a crucial role in various conflicts, including the Indo-Pakistani Wars of 1965 and 1971, and the Kargil War of 1999. The base is home to No. 28 Squadron IAF, known as "The First Supersonics," which operates MiG-29 aircraft.

Adampur is the second largest airbase of the Indian Air Force, developed from a humble airstrip into a fully operational base over the past 75 years.

The main runway is 9,039 feet long and 148 feet wide, surfaced with asphalt, suitable for handling a wide range of military aircraft.

The facility serves both military and limited civilian (domestic airport) operations, catering to the Doaba region of Punjab.

It is home to elite IAF fighter squadrons, such as the MiG-29s and Su-30 MKIs.

One S-400 air defense missile regiment was also installed here in 2022 to further fortify its defense system. It also has upgraded surveillance and radar facilities.

Adampur was a key location during Operation Sindoor, withstanding attempted missile strikes from Pakistan, all of which were intercepted before reaching the base.

In recent developments, the base was targeted during the 2025 India-Pakistan conflict. On May 10, 2025, Pakistan launched drone and missile attacks on Adampur Air Base, aiming to destroy the S-400 air defense system deployed there. However, satellite imagery and subsequent visits confirmed that the S-400 remained intact

On May 13, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the airbase to commend the Indian Air Force personnel involved in Operation Sindoor. During his visit, he issued a stern warning to Pakistan, stating that any future terror attacks would be met with decisive retaliation, even targeting perpetrators within their homes.
